Story: ‘A Dictionary of Our Time in the Wild’

Once we were in sync in the wilds, we thought in the same wordless language. We spoke in footfall, we thought in day-cycles and seasons.

I’m happy to announce that my latest short story, ‘A Dictionary of Our Time in the Wild’, has been published and is available to read on the excellent Litro Magazine website. Thank you to the Litro team for making this story their Editor’s Pick!

This experimental short story follows two perfect strangers who meet on the English moorland and find themselves living together on a barge as they explore the wilderness.

The short scenes are told not chronologically, like most regular stories, but alphabetically according to the skulking creatures, soaring birds, earthy fungi or skittering insects they discover - gradually revealing the nature of their peculiar relationship, and their ultimate fate.

If you have any thoughts on this story, please do share them on this page or on Twitter, where you can find me @davidbrookesuk.
